2013 Yoga Outreach teachers

Teachers are listed in the same order as pictured on the posted flyer.

We are so happy to offer a great mix of respected area yoga instructors once again.

Loretta Zedella
Yoga’s life-transforming abilities inspire Loretta daily. She has been teaching yoga for over ten years and practicing for nearly 30 years. Loretta was motivated to found the charitable group Yoga Outreach Columbus while attending an incredible charitable class co-taught by Seane Corn, Shiva Rea, and Baron Baptiste. She has been on staff teaching yoga at Ohio Wesleyan University since 2004. Loretta teaches at several other locations and is mobile to bring yoga to homes, workplaces and meeting spaces. Erich Schiffmann is her beloved teacher, and she loves learning from each of her yoga students.
Loretta is a fan of humor and while taking these poses seriously, she believes we could take ourselves lightly. She is a registered yoga teacher who also offers healthful workshops with her plant-based chef husband, The Duke of Fork. Feel free to ask Loretta about her love of travel, long marriage, and four kids. www.LorettaYoga.com

Michael Murphy was a huge help to Yoga Outreach Columbus last year. He cleared the space--including wedding tables and a dance floor--so we could practice. He took his first yoga class in 2004 on a lovely beach in Koh Phangan, Thailand. Immediately he developed a love for yoga that has since grown to become the path of his life. After spending a few years working and traveling, he decided it was time to become more intent on his practice. While studying massage therapy, yoga became the best tool he had to keep his health, combat stress, and help manage his day-to-day existence. In August 2010 he started a daily yoga practice that includes  asana, pranayama, and meditation. He has studied with Devarshi Steven Hartman, Megha Nancy Buttenheim, and Jovinna Chan. Michael received his 200hr ytt certification from the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health. Michael is currently studying at Yoga on High with Martha Marcom and other amazing teachers, working towards his 500hr certification.
Michael blends his personal Power Yoga practice with his Kripalu training to bring a powerful asana practice that encourages opening and personal growth.  Of the multitude of benefits yoga brings to his life, one of the most important to him is how, through practice and getting to know his body and mind, he can gain insight into what he feels and who he truly is.

Abby Dorn, RYT
We at Yoga Outreach Columbus are so happy to welcome Abby back to our teaching team. So many people have commented about how lovely her singing is. Abby received her 500 hour teacher training certification from Yoga Zone/BeYoga with Alan Finger in New York City in 2002, and she has been joyfully teaching ever since. She is influenced by many teachers including Mark Whitwell, Rodney Yee, Ana Forrest, Sharon Salzberg, and Lois Nesbitt. In 2003, Abby completed a prenatal yoga training with Carrie Parker Gastelu, and in 2004 she became certified to teach Itsy Bitsy Yoga TM for babies and toddlers. Originally from Delaware, she lived and taught in Brooklyn, NY for 8 years and moved to Columbus in 2008. She currently teaches a wide range of populations at Balanced Yoga in Clintonville, Grow Yoga in Grandview, and The Wellness Community in Powell. Abby is trained in the ISHTA style of yoga which is a blended style of hatha and vinyasa yoga that incorporates detailed alignment. Abby sees yoga as a practice of active gratitude for the life we are given, as a time to honor and nurture our bodies and to celebrate our vitality, and as a time to connect to ourselves and each other through heart opening and mindful attention to the breath. She is eternally grateful to all her teachers (including her students!) who share their yoga and help to guide her on the journey.

Julia McSheffery, E-RYT500, CPT
We at Yoga Outreach are happy to have Julia return to teach. Combining a strong understanding of the body’s structure and systems as well as offering extensive experience and skill in yoga and its therapeutic potential, Julia provides her students the opportunity to easily understand and incorporate yoga practices into their lives in a meaningful way.  Originally interested in yoga as a means of recouping some of the flexibility she lost because of sport rock climbing, Julia quickly realized the benefits of yoga and its healing of injury and illness in her own life.   Besides having a degree in exercise science, Julia is also a certified yoga teacher and is registered with the Yoga Alliance as an E-RYT500 yoga therapy teacher (500hr, ShivaShakti Synthesis, Janice George) and as a teacher of vinyasa flow (200hr level, White Lotus Foundation, Ganga White and Tracy Rich). In addition to these certifications, Julia is thankful for her training with Todd Norian, Ann Greene, David Swenson, Shiva Rea, Donna Farhi, Amy Weintraub, Elise Browning Miller, Judith Lasater, and Tom Myers. Her experience includes teaching all levels of yoga in a variety of styles throughout the greater Columbus area. She currently teaches classes at studios and facilities throughout the city in addition to partnering in both levels of ShivaShakti Synthesis teacher training. Julia is a member of the International Association of Yoga Therapists, www.iayt.org.

Constance Piwtorak, ERYT-200, CPT
Constance has been working for many years assisting clients in finding better health and wellness. Originally from Indiana, Constance is a graduate of Purdue University and Otterbein College holding degrees in Psychology and Elementary Education.  After developing a personal yoga practice, Constance completed her teacher training program in 2005. Constance has also instructed step aerobics, body sculpt/boot camp, kickboxing, indoor cycling and Pilates classes. She now concentrates on helping others recognize the need to respect and guide the body into a fit state through a balanced program concentrating on the body, mind and spirit.
Constance recently completed training and certification as a Wellcoaches Wellness and Fitness Coach.  This training allows her to “coach” clients through health and wellness changes for life. Constance is currently a fitness trainer, wellness coach and yoga teacher in Columbus.   For fun, Constance enjoys time with her husband, Bill, their three children, two furry cats and one loveable dog.  She also loves gardening, going to the movies and spending time with friends.

Elizabeth Miller, RYT500, is a certified yoga teacher through the American Viniyoga Institute and a member of the International Association of Yoga Therapists. She has been teaching yoga since 2002. In addition to her yogic studies, Elizabeth also holds certification in Thai Yoga Massage from the Lotus Palm School in Montreal. Honoring the five dimensions of humanity, Elizabeth weaves classes and individualized practices that touch the physical, mental, energetic, psychological, and spiritual dimensions of our being. www.redenyoga.com

Mary Coleman is a 200-RYT (Registered Yoga Teacher) through the YogaAlliance. She believes in the power of yoga to heal and to create the fertile ground for growth and transformation.
"Yoga has been very generous to me. It healed my body and allowed me to discover my full potential. It has also given me the portal to follow the deepest desire of my heart: to help others. I have seen first hand how yoga can transform someone, not only through my own experience but also by observing my students. It is astonishing how quickly the transformation can be at times. It is also very humbling."
Mary's philosophy of yoga is that every one, regardless of their perceived limitations, can have a yoga practice.  "I use props (bolsters, blocks, blankets, the wall, chairs, whatever is available) to help my students get as much out of their practice as they can." She also believes that yoga should be fun. "As adults, we don't play or laugh nearly enough!"
In addition to teaching yoga, Mary is a Certified Health Coach. "I integrate health coaching into my yoga classes. I talk about the importance of being sure that life is well-balanced and that we nourish ourselves, not just with food but with friendship, community and passion for life. And I will always tell you to eat your green leafy vegetables!" www.OntheSquareYoga.com
